Yahoo acquires Arabic Maktoob site

Yahoo looks to be reaching around the globe, as the original internet portal just acquired Maktoob, an Arabic online content community based in Dubai. The acquisition gives Yahoo access to 19.5 million people in the Arabic world, and is one of the first truly notable purchases for Yahoo since Carol Bartz took the helm as CEO.

Yahoo!-Microsoft search deal: 10 year lockup

Yahoo! and Microsoft officially announced in a press release this morning that the two companies have struck a deal aimed at improving, "the Web search experience for users and advertisers." The deal puts Bing as the official search engine of Yahoo for the next 10 years, according to the press release.

Web 1.0 was all about the rise of portals-- so called jumping off points wherein users could be caught up to date. Web 2.0 was more about users telling each other what's going on, and less about some editor creating a homepage for users to peruse. Yahoo, the largest Web 1.0 portal to survive, is trying to mix the two together and create something more useful. Will it work, or is it destined for the bin of failure? We ask two tech journos, Mike Rose from TUAW and Jonathan Strickland from HowStuffWorks.com.

Facebook traffic on track to overtake Google, Yahoo

Facebook continues to gain visitors at such a rapid clip that it may soon overtake Google and Yahoo. According to web analytics firm Compete, traffic for the social network grew by 8% last month, thanks in part to its Facebook Connect API, allowing it to surpass MSN in the number of unique visitors. Given the trend of each site, Facebook could become the most visited site in the U.S. by the end of the year.

Yahoo! kills travel site FareChase, shows signs of trimming fat

TechCrunch says the company is folding FareChase into its regular travel site, but more importantly Yahoo! is showing signs its serious about reeling in underperforming units.
