Asus will release USB 3.0 expansion card soon

Asus claims it will soon release the world's first USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0 expansion card according to Maximum PC. The add-on card will be available for about $30 retail and will allow buyers to add both brand new technologies, two ports for each, to their existing PCs.

Amazon announces Kindle for PC

Amazon has announced Kindle for PC, an application that allows users to read Kindle books on their desktop or laptop, and can sync with other Kindle devices via Amazon's Whispersync technology. Kindle for PC will be available worldwide as a free download next month.

Acer hits #2 worldwide over Dell

Acer has now passed Dell to be the number two PC maker worldwide, according to Gartner. The PC manufacturer has increased its market share from 12.5% in the second quarter to 15.4%. Acer still has an 11.8 % gap below HP in the U.S. shipment numbers. With the release of Windows 7 coming next week, some analysts believe the fourth quarter will see a dramatic increase that may soon taper off.

Comcast now alerts customers to PC infections

Comcast has launched a trial of a new service, which will automatically monitor bandwidth use of customers, and alert them to any potential PC infections, such as being part of a botnet. Customers in Denver are the first to get the service and Comcast says it plans to roll the service out to all customers.

Dell to lay off 905 in N.C. plant closing

Dell has announced it will be closing its PC manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem, N.C., which opened in 2005. Six hundred workers will be laid off in November, and an additional 305 will be cut in January. In 2007, Dell planned to reduce costs by shrinking its worldwide workforce by 10 percent, but is now expecting even more layoffs.

Acer’s Veriton Z280G combines netbook with desktop

Acer has announced a new nettop all-in-one computer system. The Veriton Z280G features an Intel Atom processor and generous 18.5" widescreen LCD display, and implements a fanless design that should all but eliminate noise from the machine. Aimed at business use for reception areas, hotel lobbies, and employees with light-duty tasks, the Z280G will retail at $499.

EU investigating Intel on monopoly charges

The European Union has been investigating charges that Intel is guilty of monopoly abuse and is expected to announce their findings this week. Sources tell Reuters Intel provided rebates to computer makers and coerced retailers to only sell Intel machines which would be in violation of EU regulations.
