Windows 7 security updates now available

Microsoft released its first patch for Windows 7, in addition to 33 other patches making yesterday's 'patch Tuesday' the largest to date. This means when people turn ont their brand new Windows 7 computers, they will be greeted with an update as soon as they connect to the internet.

The updates are also required for Windows Vista, Sever 2008, XP and Server 2003.

Microsoft shows off free, ad-supported, MS Office 2010

Microsoft is showing off a free, ad-supported version of Office 2010. The new edition won't be commercially or publicly available, but instead will ship with new computers exclusively, according to Ars Technica. The new ad-supported version supersedes Microsoft Works, a stripped down office suite that was often preinstalled on computers.

Microsoft Office coming soon to Nokia phones

Cellphone software rivals, Microsoft and Nokia have partnered to offer Microsoft Office on some Nokia mobile handsets. Technology analysts point to the increased use of smartphones and the ability to use of Google's free Web-based applications on these devices as a catalyst for the agreement.

Microsoft loses patent suit; barred from selling MS Word

In an east Texas courtroom (where else!), Judge Leonard Davis has ruled Microsoft's implementation of XML, DOCX and DOCM violates a patent from i4i, a Canadian company. The Judge ordered Microsoft to pay $290 million in damages, as well as stop selling Microsoft Word within 60 days. Microsoft is appealing the ruling, and could be forced to reissue Word with a workaround.
