Verizon unveils Motorola Droid [UPDATE]
Verizon unveiled the hotly-anticipated Motorola Droid smartphone, available for $199 with a two-year contract beginning November 6th. Featuring a 3.7-inch 16:9 touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera, and all the normal trimmings, the Droid comes with Android 2.0, bringing Facebook integration, voice-activated search, and a physical keyboard.
UPDATE: Some Verizon stores will be opening an hour early for the Droid release on friday.
Mobile industry standardizes around 3.5mm audio jack in all devices
After mini-USB has been declared as the standard connector in the future of cell phone charging, device manufacturers represented by the CTIA are pushing for 2012 as the year when the lowly 3.5mm jack becomes the standard audio connector for microphones and earphones. We're fans of the 3.5mm connection, and the 2012 target date is fairly conservative, considering the likes of Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung and Apple already implement 3.5mm jacks in their phones.
CTIA Bust, could Google buy Twitter?
CTIA, North America's biggest wireless tradeshow, was a bit of a bust this year. The lack of major announcements spawned a sense that the American cash strapped consumer only cares about two things: Features and price. Ross Rubin from NPD Group and Chris Ziegler from Engadget join the show to talk about how the iPhone and Palm Pre are the major devices in the mobile mindset, and other companies like Motorola, Nokia and LG have had to adjust their strategy to compensate for the shift. We also briefly touch on the Google / Twitter potential hookup: This rumor seems busted, but while our guests think Google's potential acquisition might be likely, I'm a little less convinced.
Motorola announces Evoke iPhone clone
Motorola has announced a new handset at CTIA that is touchscreen exclusive, and really wants to be the iPhone, Instinct, or any other touchscreen phone released over the last two years. Give it a rest, Moto.
