Magic Mouse, Mac Mini server, iMac, MacBook and all that Apple malarchy
With little fanfare, when compared to typical Apple product updates, Steve Jobs and company updated the company's lineup with a plethura of products. Among them: A new mouse, a refreshed iMac, a Mac Mini server, a redesigned MacBook, and all this without so much as a single "Boom" from el Jobso himself. What's the highlights of the announcement, and how do we parse it? We talk to Gary Rosenzweig from MacMost, and Jonathan Strickland from HowStuff works.
Apple redesigns the MacBook
Apple refreshed the design of its entry-level laptop this morning. The new MacBook has smooth round corners, a glass trackpad, and a magnetic closure, but stays white and plastic. The new model also borrows the LED-backlit display, still at 13.3-inches, from its big Pro bothers, along with the built-in, non-removable 7-hour battery. The price for this latest version remains at $999 and includes a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, and a 250GB hard drive.
Rumors: October 7th launch date for new iMacs and MacBooks?
Rumors are pointing to an October 7th launch date for the new iMacs, Mac Minis and MacBooks. Over the weekend, Google AdSense has started showing ads for new Mac Minis, MacBooks and iMacs for users in the Netherlands, according to Engadget. The ads translate to say "Apple's Newest MacBook. Thinner, lighter and faster! Free delivery. Order today", "The Brand new iMac. Ultra Thin 20 & 24 inch models. From only €1099." and "Apple's New Mac mini. Faster and more affordable than ever. From only € 499".

MacBook Pro gets matte display option on 15-inch model
It'll cost $50 and add a silver bezel around the edges of the computer, but Apple has re-added the option to go with an anti-glare (aka matte) finish on its 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks.
LG rumored to be making 15-inch OLED screens
While the details are sketchy, and the sources are thin, OLED-Display.net is hearing LG is producing a 15-inch OLED screen. What's the big deal? For starters, the only other company making a commercially available OLED screen is Sony, with its XEL-1 which costs about $2,000 for an 11-inch screen size. Secondly, some are (wildly) speculating that the 15-inch screen could make its way into the next generation of MacBooks.
MacBooks claim 91% of premium notebook market
The June numbers from NPD show that Apple's MacBooks have taken 91% of the above $1,000 notebook market, up from 88% in May and 66% in early 2008. The 25% jump in MacBook sales thanks to lower prices and new MacBook Pros are believed to be the primary reasons for the jump. All but the white MacBooks are priced above $1000, so most of Apple's MacBook sales fall under the category of "premium notebook."
Rumor: Apple considering extending anti-glare displays on more Macs
AppleInsider sources say Apple considers extending the $50 "anti-glare" option, currently only available for the 17" MacBook Pro (base price: $2499), to more models: likely the 13" and the 15" MacBook Pro. The move may be seen as a response to the "Pro" line owners who have been very vocal about the lack of a matte option since first glossy-only MacBooks were introduced.
MacBook Pro firmware update locks out some third-party hard drives
Apple recently released an update to the recently released 13-inch MacBook Pro which raised its hard drive speed from 1.5GB/s to 3GB/s, but now that same update has caused some third-party hard drives to stop working properly. Realistically, only users utilizing the fastest SSD units will notice a speed difference between the two firmwares, so users are advised to not upgrade till Apple fixes the issue.
