Apple unveils iPod nano with camera, good idea or gimmick?
Steve Jobs made his first public appearance since undergoing a liver transplant earlier in the year, and the company unveiled a few software updates, including iTunes 9, but on the hardware side of things the company added a camera to the iPod nano. The biggest surprise? Apple didn't end up unveiling any sort of real hardware updates to the iPod touch, though it did add a 64GB model.
We talk to Stuart Miles from Pocket-Lint about the event, and he echoes our sentiment that the event was rather bland. The iPod camera seems rather odd, since it can't take stills, though the company tells Pocket-Lint users can extract stills from the software after it's been downloaded.
What's your take on the news? Are you excited about the new nano, or are you more excited about other upcoming players like the Zune HD?
New iPods introduced today

Today's announcement brought about more upgrades to the iPod line, compared to last year's event.
First up is the new iPod touch with "OpenGL ES 2.0, that's up to 50% faster." Available now on the 32GB and new 64GB iPod touch models, this is the same addition that we first saw in he iPhone 3GS, and it enables the device to run graphics-intensive applications better. The new 8GB iPod touch, without OpenGL ES 2.0, will now sell for $199, while the 32GB and 64GB models will cost $299 and $399 respectively.
As with last year, the iPod nano received the most updates, with a larger 2.2-inch 320x240 display, built-in microphone and speaker, FM radio, and pedometer. Enclosed in a new polished anodized aluminum casing, the nano also gains the new Genius Mixes feature and iPod shuffle's VoiceOver. Available now in several different colors, the 8GB model is $149 and the 16GB costs $179.
The most rumored and well-received feature on the new iPod nano is its video camera, capable of recording H.264 VGA video (640 x 480) in 30 fps. Oddly enough, however, there is no camera on the new touch.
Finally, some minor upgrades: iPod shuffle now also comes in pink, blue and green for 2GB ($59) and 4GB ($79), with a Apple Store exclusive stainless steel version for $99. The iPod classic now comes with 160 GB of storage for the same $249 price, with no other changes.
First pics of iPod touch 3G, nano 5G surface
iPod case manufacturers seem to be the weak link in Apple's secrecy chain, as one company has pushed out what appears to be pics of the next-gen iPod touch and iPod nano in fresh plastic cases.
iPod nano, touch prices slashed dramatically before press event
An Engadget tipster points to the Apple store undergoing some massive price fluctuation in the run up to today's Apple event. The 8GB model runs $189 (was $229), the 16GB model costs $249 (was $299), and the 32GB model is $279 (was $399).
Flood of iPod cases with camera slots lead to a logical next step in Apple’s media player
A slew of iPod cases in China have been pictured, showing off possible camera features and dimensions of the next generation in the devices. Cult of Mac has a ton of photos of the alleged cases showing them in a variety of styles and colors but one thing is for sure: Each case has the holes in the same place on the back. This gives some solid leverage to the photos and the fact that most cases, and even iPhone hardware, are made directly in China makes the slide from "rumor" to "news" even faster.
Leaked cases point to camera in next iPod Nano/Touch
Rumor's continue circulating today that Apple's next iteration on its iPod Touch and iPod Nano lines will include a rear mounted camera like the iPhone. New evidence in the form of leaked third party cases emerged today to further stoke these flames. This is not the first time third party cases have pointed towards new iPod hardware.
