Magic Mouse, Mac Mini server, iMac, MacBook and all that Apple malarchy
With little fanfare, when compared to typical Apple product updates, Steve Jobs and company updated the company's lineup with a plethura of products. Among them: A new mouse, a refreshed iMac, a Mac Mini server, a redesigned MacBook, and all this without so much as a single "Boom" from el Jobso himself. What's the highlights of the announcement, and how do we parse it? We talk to Gary Rosenzweig from MacMost, and Jonathan Strickland from HowStuff works.
Apple unveils iMac refresh, capacitive touch mouse
Apple has released a refresh of its iMac line which will now feature an all aluminum casing with edge-to-edge glass and an SD card slot. The new 21.5-inch and 27-inch models start at $1199 and $1699 respectively; the latter of which can be upgraded to a 2.8Ghz Core i7 quad-core processor. The peripherals have also gotten some upgrades as the keyboard now has an all aluminum casing and the mouse is now capacitive touch. The new mouse, "Magic Mouse," will work like the touchpads on existing MacBooks and allow a two-button mode.
Rumors: October 7th launch date for new iMacs and MacBooks?
Rumors are pointing to an October 7th launch date for the new iMacs, Mac Minis and MacBooks. Over the weekend, Google AdSense has started showing ads for new Mac Minis, MacBooks and iMacs for users in the Netherlands, according to Engadget. The ads translate to say "Apple's Newest MacBook. Thinner, lighter and faster! Free delivery. Order today", "The Brand new iMac. Ultra Thin 20 & 24 inch models. From only €1099." and "Apple's New Mac mini. Faster and more affordable than ever. From only € 499".
Also, Apple stores have recieved new signs which aren't to be displayed 'til October 7th, and the stores should expect short stock between October 7th and October 9th.
New Apple keyboard mouse points to iMac refresh
Apple has submitted a new bluetooth keyboard and mouse to the FCC according to Engadget. Rumors have been circulating Apple will release brand new iMac computers during October, in time for the holiday season, and with the keyboard showing up in the FCC, and Apple's quick response to remove images from the database, we think it's all but a lock.
As for the actual filing, the rumors say to expect some type of multitouch gesture controls, ala the MacBook Pro trackpad and iPhone touchscreen, and the mouse may also be aluminium, like the body of the iMac.
