British soldiers encouraged to use social media tools

Unlike the US, the British Ministry of Defence is encouraging its troops to use social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The MoD published its own "Online Engagement Guidelines" that "asks personnel to use common sense over the amount of detail revealed."

Illegal sharing down, music streaming up

A UK survey puts the number of 15-year-old "thieves" down to 27% from 46% last year, with many of the teens using legal streaming services instead, like Europe-only Spotify and YouTube.

YouTube allows off-site links via video overlays

The popular video site now allows some members to link to non-YouTube locations via links in lower-third style overlays. Previously only offered to a select few, the "Call-to-Action Overlays" are now available to all members of YouTube's CPC Promoted Videos program at no additional charge, allowing direct access to the provider's web site.

YouTube mobile uploads jump 400% after iPhone 3GS launch

YouTube has announced that the number of mobile uploads to the popular video site have been up 400% since the iPhone 3GS hit stores a week ago.  If that wasn't impressive enough, they also state that over the last 6 months, mobile uploads are up 1700%.  With more handsets having the capability to record and upload video, this number should continue to grow at a rapid rate in the future.
