Internet users spend 68 hours online every month, survey finds
A recent Nielsen survey reveals that the average Internet user spends 68 hours a month, or around 2.5 hours a day, online. The same survey shows that Google is the top web brand for the month of September, followed by Yahoo!, MSN and Facebook.
Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Hotmail account information leaked
Login credentials for some users of Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Hotmail have been leaked on the Internet, according to CNET UK. While Google and Microsoft admit that some user passwords have been stolen, Google insists that phishing attacks are to blame and not insecurities in its network. Amazon, Microsoft and Yahoo try to stop Google
Amazon, Microsoft and Yahoo are joining forces as members of the Open Book Alliance opposed to Google, "trying to monopolise the library system". In a settlement with publishers and authors in 2008, Google agreed to pay $125 million and in return build a Book Rights Registry and offered to pay registered groups 70% on the sale of their work.
Yahoo launches “Deals” website
Yahoo has just launched a new site that allows users to catch numerous types of deals and bargains. The site, simply called "Yahoo Deals," will host a variety of bargains for the day, coupons for chain and local grocery stores, and additional coupons due to a partnership with Val-Pak. Users can also follow the service on Twitter, allowing users to find top deals in real time.
Microsoft’s Bing moves up one percent in U.S. market share
The war over search just became lukewarm with new numbers released from StatCounter which reveal that Microsoft's Bing has moved up slightly more than a percentage point in market share to 9.41%. Bing's jump still pales in comparison to Google's 77.54% in U.S. market share but it does show that Microsoft may have finally brought some competition to the search behemoth.
Ballmer backs Yahoo! deal
Despite shares of Yahoo! tumbling nearly 15% since the company struck a deal with Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, still thinks the deal is worthwhile, telling analysts that, "People haven't figured it out."
