One out of every five people online use Twitter

A Pew Internet Project study shows that Twitter usage rose 8%, meaning in one out of every five people online is using the service. The study showed growth came from users under 44, social network and mobile web users. Thirty-five percent of social network users use Twitter and something else, while 6 percent use only Twitter. Overall, just under half of all Internet users use a social network.

Twitter to crowdsource translation

Twitter has announce a new project to help the company translate the site into other languages by letting its users do the translation. Those who participate in the project will be giving a badge on their page and will be given ranks based on how much they have translated.

Nielsen releases new data on Facebook vs. MySpace

According to new data released by Nielsen, the top 3rd affluent parts of the population is 25% more likely to use Facebook as opposed to other sites. The data also showed the bottom 3rd is 37% more likely to use MySpace.

Google adding trending topics to search

Google has said it will start adding trending topics (in Google terms: Hot Trends) to search result pages which include one of the top 100 searches. This move maybe a first step into real-time search by Google in an attempt to compete with trending topics a la Twitter.

JahJah opens phone-over-Twitter service

JahJah, a VoIP telephony company, just launched a service that allows Twitter users to make free phone calls between one another. Users who have accounts with both companies can use the service, called JAHJAH@Call, with standard @ reply functions of twitter. The caller's phone will then ring, and connect out automatically to the receiving party for a maximum call length of two minutes - an amount of time that JahJah considers to be a relative length to a tweet.

Psychologist: Facebook makes you smarter, Twitter makes you dumber

A new study conducted by Dr Tracy Alloway from the University of Stirling in Scotland claims that Facebook could improve your intelligence while Twitter does the opposite. Also cited in the study that can improve your memory: video games and sudoku.  Items that can also lower your intelligence? text messaging, YouTube and TV.  So go ahead kids: post those song lyrics... it's making you smarter!

Twitter used in Iowa operating rooms to keep patient’s family up to date

St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is using Twitter to inform friends and family in the waiting room what is happening with their loved one in the operating room.  Twittering from the OR helps relieve some of the worry experienced with not knowing what is happening in the operating room, especially if a surgery isn't running on schedule.

NFL forbids updating social networks

The National Football League– or the no fun league as some sports columnsts have said– has adopted new rules regarding social media: Players, coaches, team staff and members of the media can not update their social network accounts before, during and after the game.
