TiVo app for Blackberry now available

After a year in development, TiVo has finally launched its' mobile application for Blackberry devices. Users can use this app to remotely schedule recordings, a feature found in DVRs from Dish Network and Verizon FiOS.

TiVo sues AT&T and Verizon, continues to lose customers

TiVo has filed suit against AT&T and Verizon, alleging the two infringed on its patents related to time-shifting live television. As its subscription numbers continue the slide that began two and a half years ago, TiVo apparently hopes to gain some sort of licensing deal to help keep it afloat.

Let's face it– making that trip to the corner video store for a movie rental is fast becoming a memory we will tell our grandchildren about.  Net connections continue to get faster and Hollywood studios don't want to make the same mistake the music industry did.  Digital movie downloads are quickly becoming the easiest way to make it a "Blockbuster night" without leaving the comfort of your couch.  Sure, there are lots of ways to bring Hollywood to your TV, but in this episode of The 5, we take a look at simple set top boxes that harness the power of the internet to deliver the goods to your big screen.

Tivo and Best Buy team up to develop DVR TVs

Tivo has made a deal with Best Buy to begin developing Insignia brand DVR-HDTVs that are preloaded with Tivo software. Tivo attempted a similar integration with Humax LCD TVs in 2005 but no products were released.

EchoStar to pay over $100 million to TiVo. Again.

EchoStar was ordered by the court to pay TiVo at least $103 million for failing to comply with a previous order in a proper manner. The parent company of Dish Network had to pay nearly the same amount in 2006 for infringing on TiVo's DVR patents and were supposed to disable the recording features. Instead, Echostar installed a new operating system on the devices.

TiVo to sell data to advertisers

Ironically, the company most associated with avoiding TV advertisments will be selling customer data to TV advertisers and networks on which shows are most watched, and (naturally) which advertisments are fast forwarded.

Blockbuster and TiVo make a deal: So what?

It might seem momentus, but Blockbuster and TiVo's deal to deliver streaming content to TiVo boxes through Blockbuster's service means little to both aging entertainment brands.
