The company most known for the direct-to-buyer computer model has started showing off a phone in Brazil and China, and its even made an appearance in the FCC database meaning we might see it stateside. Is it smart for Dell to launch a phone given the hyper competitive environment? We ask Dana Wollman from Laptop Magazine, and our own Iyaz Akthar.

Dell receives laptop for repair, only returns hard drive

Recently somebody sent back their Dell Studio 1537 notebook to Dell due to a faulty DVD drive. He was told by Dell that the repaired machine had been dispatched, but when the package arrived it only had a refurbished 250GB hard drive and no laptop. Since then, he's spent 90 minutes on the telephone and is stuck with a 250GB HDD but no laptop. Gizmodo recommend emailing michael@dell.com in cases like this, as any issues are routed to an executive relations team.

Sprint releases Dell Mini 10

As expected, Sprint has unveiled a bundle featuring the Dell Mini 10 with built-in EV-DO for $200 after a rebate, which saves $150 off the normal price. In addition to the required two-year $60 / month data plan, the Sprint version of the Mini 10 will run Windows XP Home, have a 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth and 802.11g WiFi.

Adamo XPS features heat-sensing unlock technology

The Dell Adamo XPS has been demoed for the first time, and its claim to fame is fancy "heat-sensing unlock technology." Expected to be officially announced in November, the Adamo XPS can only be opened by sliding a finger over a heat-sensing strip on the notebook's cover.

Dell announces baseball designs on select laptops

Dell released baseball designs for its Inspiron, Inspiron Mini, and Studio notebooks on Tuesday. Buyers can choose from 30 different designs from representing the teams of Major League Baseball. Prices for the lid artwork haven't yet been released.

Acer hits #2 worldwide over Dell

Acer has now passed Dell to be the number two PC maker worldwide, according to Gartner. The PC manufacturer has increased its market share from 12.5% in the second quarter to 15.4%. Acer still has an 11.8 % gap below HP in the U.S. shipment numbers. With the release of Windows 7 coming next week, some analysts believe the fourth quarter will see a dramatic increase that may soon taper off.

Dell to lay off 905 in N.C. plant closing

Dell has announced it will be closing its PC manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem, N.C., which opened in 2005. Six hundred workers will be laid off in November, and an additional 305 will be cut in January. In 2007, Dell planned to reduce costs by shrinking its worldwide workforce by 10 percent, but is now expecting even more layoffs.

Dell may return to the U.S. handheld market

Dell may sell an Android-based phone in the United States later this year, an anonymous source told CrunchGear. The Wall Street Journal also reported that Dell may sell the phone in 2010 and it will appear on the AT&T network. Dell is already selling such a phone in China but hasn't had a phone in the U.S. market since discontinuing the Axium in 2007.
