Dell Mini 3i smartphone unveiled: Smart move?
The company most known for the direct-to-buyer computer model has started showing off a phone in Brazil and China, and its even made an appearance in the FCC database meaning we might see it stateside. Is it smart for Dell to launch a phone given the hyper competitive environment? We ask Dana Wollman from Laptop Magazine, and our own Iyaz Akthar.
Next gen iPhone on the way?

As usual with rumors like this, we're light on the details, but we've got a picture purportedly of a next generation iPhone's midboard.
We'd expect the next-gen iPhone to hit in the summer, since Apple is a company of habit and that's when we've seen the other iPhones launch. That being said, we're sure the rumor pace will continue to accelerate and we'll likely hear more about this device, if it actually exists.
iPhone hits China with relative whimper
Apple's beloved phone finally hit state-owned China Unicom customers on Friday, but a WSJ report pegs the launch as relatively lukewarm, especially when compared to sell-out launches in the US and Japan. A Chinese research firm reports unauthorized iPhone usage at two million, which might be hampering demand.
Nokia unveils phone for Chinese market
Nokia unveiled its first phone compatible with China’s proprietary 3G technology. The Nokia 6788 features a slider-style layout and a mirror finish display, with a goal to sell lower priced phones at a higher volume. Nokia, with a 38% global market share, spends over $60 billion in research and development. The Nokia 6788’s pricing has not been announced and ships later this year.
Last three PC makers stop including Green Dam
Lenovo, Acer, and Sony have all quit including the controversial Green Dam Youth Escort filter once mandated by the Chinese government. The software was required as part of China's efforts to curb Internet pornography, but the mandate was dropped after anti-censorship pressure. Some manufacturers continued to provide the filtering application, but now all have stopped including it with new computers.
Palm Pre rumored to be coming to China Telecom
The Palm Pre may soon be coming to China on China Telecom's network if recent rumors are to be believed. PCWorld is reporting that China Telecom, who is currently courting RIM's Blackberrys as well, is talking with Palm about bringing the Pre to China. China Telecom already has the iPhone exclusively and is looking for hot new smartphones to give them an edge in the race to capture the 3G market in China.
Apple partners with China Unicom
Update from Gregory Schultz: The Wall Street Journal reports that China Unicom will sell the iPhone 3G (sans Wi-Fi) on September 28, 2009. No word on the price.
We're hearing via 163.com, a Chinese portal, that Apple has partnered with China Unicom to bring the iPhone to the mainland. The phone will hit China with an 8GB version for about $365, though the WiFi will be disabled till it complies with the Chinese-developed WAPI security standard.
First press event for Dell’s Mini3i at China Mobile
The long-rumored, Dell phone, dubbed the Mini3i, has been revealed at the ongoing China Mobile event centered around the Open Mobile System. If the WiFi-less, 3G-less Mini3i happens to be the same Android-running phone that US carriers have shunned earlier this year, it's not exactly difficult to see why. No word yet on whether the Mini3i will be released anywhere outside China.
Pics of Dell’s Android-based smartphone leaked?
While they're not much to go on, pictures of a smartphone sporting Dell branding have surfaced at the Boy Genius Report. There's a laundry list of specs too, like a three megapixel camera, multi-touch capable UI, and handwriting recognition– an important add-on since this phone is allegedly bound for China.
