Microsoft backtracks CEO’s comment on Blu-ray for 360
In a recent interview with Gizmodo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said "you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories" while discussing the Xbox 360. Blu-ray on 360 looked like a slam dunk, but now Microsoft's PR people are trying to retract the statement, insisting that Ballmer was referring instead to Blu-ray accessories for the PC. Microsoft emphasized their focus for 1080p HD movies on the 360 continues to be instant-on streaming service.
Netflix now offers streaming on Insignia Blu-Ray players
Netflix has announced a partnership with Best Buy which integrates Netflix's streaming service into Insignia Blu-Ray players. The NS-BRDVD3 and NS-WBRDVD will allow on-device queue management, WiFi connectivity on the higher-end player, and Ethernet-only on the cheaper model. The players, retailing for $179.99 and $249.99, are on sale now exclusively at Best Buy.
PSP formatted videos to premier on Sony Blu-Ray Discs
Sony will be rolling out movies for its PSP devices via Blu-ray Discs. The digital copies will only be playable on a PSP and must be transferred off the disc to the device using the PS3's Blu-ray drive. The new discs will start rolling out November 10th and the digital copies will be available on only select titles.
Sony unveils seemingly affordable networked Blu-ray player
Sony has unveiled a new $250 Blu-ray player which can stream content from YouTube, Netflix and BRAVIA-Link modules. The BDP-N460, which ships in October, actually offers one of the first Blu-ray players that's both less expensive than the PS3 and offers different options, since Netflix won't be heading to the PS3 thanks to an exclusive game console deal with Microsoft.
iTunes 9 social elements a near-lock for September 9th event
Still not 100% confirmed, the Boy Genius Report is showing screenshots from a purported iTunes 9 which shows a user's Facebook status update from iTunes, as well as Blu-ray playback, and even third-party device support. We expect with that September 9th date looming, wherein Apple will be holding its annual music extravaganza, we'll know more about the full extent of these screenshots.
Toshiba jumps on Blu-ray bandwagon
Toshiba, the creator of the failed HD-DVD format, says its jumping on the Blu-ray bandwagon with plans to release a Blu-ray player soon. Toshiba to release Blu-ray player by end of year
The former advocate for HD DVD, Toshiba, announced that it plans to release Blu-ray players within the year. In the announcement Toshiba reveals their application "for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA)".
