Microsoft Office 2010 to feature lightweight web-apps

Microsoft is announcing Office 2010 today, and while not officially on record yet, tech journos have been expecting Ballmer and co. to announce the software for the better part of a week. TechCrunch just posted a guide to Office 2010, noting the company is rolling out free, lighter weight web-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Taking a quick peek at the screen shots, web-based Word looks extremely similar to its desktop sibling.

UPDATE: CNET says the version being demoed today is an invitation only technical preview, and that we won't see pricing, nor a release date for the web versions anytime soon.

UPDATE 2: And now the invite-only preview is up on Bittorrent for interested parties.
