Local banks target of text message scams
Scammers have been using a new phishing scheme to target the customers of regional banks via text message. Scammers send messages to all the numbers in an area code and get the bank customers to call a phony 800 number to collect their bank information. The scheme has been successful in many areas so far and flies under the radar by targeting only smaller banks in rural areas who's customers are less likely to have heard of the scam.
